Big News from Blommeland: Luma Animation has been appointed to produce the first ever animated Liewe Heksie film.

We are absolutely thrilled (and still doing happy little spell dances around the office) to announce that Luma Animation has been appointed as the official animation studio to bring Liewe Heksie, South Africa’s most lovable witch, back to life in her first-ever animated feature film!

A Magical Legacy Gets Its Moment

This isn't just another animated movie.

This is Liewe Heksie. A South African treasure. A cultural icon. A pointy-hatted reminder that even when your magic goes a bit… sideways, heart and kindness still save the day.

And here’s what makes it truly extraordinary:

We’re developing the original, unpublished script left by Liewe Heksie’s creator, the legendary Verna Vels, before she passed away.

Yes, this story comes straight from the magical pages Verna penned, full of charm and heart.

We are genuinely humbled and honoured to work with this gift of a script. It's a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and we don’t take it lightly. – Paul Meyer (Luma CEO)

Why Luma?

Their work is incredible!

From winning awards on projects like Headspace, Shaka iLembe, and Kings of Jo’burg, to crafting VFX that dazzle and characters that bounce with personality, Luma has built a reputation for storytelling with depth, humour, and cinematic flair. With over 20 years of experience working with iconic characters, Luma is our choice to take care of our dear friend Liewe Heksie.

A Thank You to Blommeland’s Believers

To the fans who grew up with Liewe Heksie, the parents who passed her on to their kids, and the curious newcomers discovering Blommeland for the first time, we see you, and we’re making this film with you in our hearts.

This project is a tribute:

To Verna.

To nostalgia.

To the power of South African stories.
