Big News from Blommeland: Luma Animation has been appointed to produce the first ever animated Liewe Heksie film.

There are few things as proudly South African as Mrs. Ball’s chutney, biltong or Sunday afternoon braais. But if you were a kid growing up in South Africa from the 70s to the early 2000s, there’s another name that probably warms your heart faster than a cup of Ricoffy: Liewe Heksie.

The Magic of Verna Vels

Let’s talk about Verna Vels, the literary magician who gifted generations of South African children with Liewe Heksie, her lovable, little witch from Blommeland. Created in 1961, Liewe Heksie became the quirky fairy godmother we never knew we needed, long before Hogwarts and TikTok witches made broomsticks trendy again.

Vels had that rare talent: crafting local stories that made us laugh and dream of faraway places. Her stories were in Afrikaans, yes, but their charm crossed language barriers and wrapped itself around every heart. She gave South Africa a homegrown heroine who was as flawed and fantastic as the rest of us.

From the Radiowaves to a Screen Near You

Now, decades after she first flew into our lives, Liewe Heksie is being reimagined as a full-length animated 3D film.
